On Monday the Director General of  Imbuto Foundation, Sandrine Umutoni and Mount Kenya University Chairman and Founder, Prof Simon Gicharu, entered a five year agreement through signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU); aiming at providing education opportunities for brilliant but economically disadvantaged Rwandan students in secondary schools.

The signing of the MoU between Mount Kenya University and Imbuto Foundation which took place yesterday.

Through this partnership, Mount Kenya University contributed USD 150,000, which will be disbursed in five (5) annual installments of USD 30,000, to support the education of 100 vulnerable students in secondary school through the Imbuto Foundation’s “Edified Generation” scholarships programme.

In addition, the university will provide five (5) scholarships to brilliant girls – also beneficiaries of Imbuto Foundation, every year for the next 5 years.

In an effort to promote East African integration, three of those scholarships will be used in the Mount Kenya University – Kigali campus, while the remaining two scholarships will be attained at the main campus in Nairobi.

Mount Kenya University, is a Chartered Private University operating in the East African region, and a member of Inter University Council of East Africa, African Association of Universities and Association of Commonwealth Universities.

The University is committed to quality teaching, research and community service, which is broad-based holistic and inclusive system of education.

One of the university’s core pillars is Corporate Social Investment in support of the less advantaged members of the society. The university has identified provision of scholarships and capacity building as a strategy to influence the disadvantaged to be empowered to take charge of their livelihoods.

Present at the signing ceremony were also: the Vice Mayor in charge of Social Affairs in Kicukiro district, Mr Bayingana Emmanuel; the Vice-Chancellor Designate, Prof Evans Kerosi and Dr John Nyiligira, the Deputy Vice Chancelor in Charge of Administration, Planning and Institutional Advancement at the university, among other officials.

The ceremony also gathered members of the university staff and representatives of the students in the boardroom of the university’s campus located in Kicukiro.
