Yesterday the Kigali city health officials conducted an operation of collecting and burning packages of picot milk categorized as poorly standardized. The picot milk was imported from France, manufactured and packed by the Lactalis milk packing factory.

Rwandan health officials and political decision makers assessed the standardization of the milk and found it contained harmful substances including the Salmonella Agona microbes.

This pushed the Rwandan Ministry of health to ban its importation and it was immediately banned from its use in Rwandan market.

The Rwandan businesswoman who imported the picot milk from France and sells it in Rwanda and Burundi said that she came to know that milk powder was contaminated and decided to stop selling it.

Last December, 2017 she decided to burn these packages as to prevent Rwandans from consuming that milk.

The decision to burn all the imported picot milk was taken and all sellers who have the picot milk in stores were told to burn it all.

Niyonzima Leocadie told Umuseke that all 7 370 packages of the picot milk were burnt. They were worth 50 million Frw.

One officer from the Rwanda Standards Bureau said that burning the product aimed at protecting consumers’ lives and remove a harmful item from the Rwandan market.
