A recent report of Transparency International Rwanda has shown that Educational sector is one of the most sexually corrupted.Statistics based on a cross country research points out that 90% of the respondents said that they involved themselves in this kind of corruption.
Education sector has been pointed as one of the most concerned with this crime.
Students told the Commission that if a student refuses to get involved in this corruption, different and severe measures, in a hidden way, were taken against them such as being poorly marked after doing an exam among others. At the other hand, the ones that accept have chances to get more marks after exams and get to know which exam will be done eve before it is done.
The crisis has reached all key areas of education such as secondary until university. The problem is very crucial especially in private universities.
One of the witnesses told researchers that when she/he was studying in secondary school one of teachers urged her to get in sexual intercourse with her/him.
After the refusal the situation became worse for the student. Marks were decreased and the student was chased out frequently.
According to the report this kind of corruption mostly concerns young girls while boys regulate their issues with teachers in bars and in other circumstances.
During the publication of this report, Parliamentarians urge the House to set severe and strict law for the perpetrators of this crime.
According to the report, more is needed to be done to sensitize the general public about the crime and ways that lead to its commission so to stop this crime from spreading.
