The minister of health Dr Agnes Binagwaho has told the MPs that tin Rwanda a person becomes a HIV positive every 30 minutes. She revealed to the MPs that statistics have shown that 226, 225 Rwandans are HIV/AIDS positive, among whom 3,6 per cent are men while 2,3 per cent are women.
The Kigali city comes first in the contamination rate among all the provinces of Rwanda with the 7, 3 per cent. The Western province comes second with 2,7 per cent, the Northern Province with 2,6 per cent, the Southern Province with 2,4 per cent while the Eastern Province has the 2,1 per cent.
The category of the sex workers are the most infected with the percentage of 51 per cent. The ones from the Kigali city occupy the biggest portion with 56 per cent of contamination.
Among all the contaminated, around 50, 000 people never went for diagnosis. The research has shown that the households of wealthier people are most exposed to the contamination as the household members do not trust each other, in most cases.
The Rwandan government provides 14 billion Rwandan francs to care about patients who are tested HIV positive every year.
Among all 226,225 HIV positive people, 132,630 receive medical drugs to help them live longer and stronger. Among the ones who receive the medical drugs, 8000 are children.
The Ministry of health is worried about the fact that the number of contaminated people being part of the category that needs the most expensive drugs keeps increasing.
Last year, they were five but this year the number has reached 25 persons, a situation that increases the expenses. Despite the provision of the medical support to the contaminated, around 5000 people die every year due to the HIV/AIDS positiveness.
