One of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s official vehicles was on Wednesday night stolen from his police driver in Ruai, Nairobi. The bulletproof car, a BMW model was allegedly carjacked at about 8pm following an ambush by three gunmen according to the driver, David Machui.
Mr Machui was heading to his home at the Ruai police residential houses after his day’s duties, when he was attacked.
He said he was stripped naked and abandoned in a thicket by the thugs who then made away with the high-end limousine. The car was bearing a private number plate at the time.
State house spokesperson Manoah Esipisu confirmed the incident but denied the vehicle is part of the fleet the president uses.
Commenting on the issue, Nairobi police commander Benson Kibue said: “The vehicle has no connection to State House or any government department or the President. All we know it is an old BMW.”
By Thursday evening, the hunt for the vehicle and the suspects was ongoing.
CRIME ESCALATES
This comes barely five months after Deputy President William Ruto’s spokesperson David Mugonyi was carjacked along Dennis Pritt road in Kilimani.
Mr Mugonyi was waiting for his gate to be opened when four men confronted him, three of them armed with pistols.
He said they took control of his Toyota Prado and drove with him towards the city centre, before abandoning him at Mlolongo after robbing him of Sh22, 000 in cash and about Sh100,000 from his Mpesa account after forcing him at gun point to call his friends and tell them to send him money in his mobile phone.
The vehicle, a Toyota Prado bearing registration number KBM 979S was later found abandoned in Pipeline Estate in Embakasi.
President Kenyatta’s aunt Mrs Jean Njeri Muhoho, was also carjacked in March and dumped on Peponi road with her passenger.
Detectives said the Nissan Wingroad station wagon was abandoned outside Jacaranda Hotel in Westlands.
It appeared the suspects avoided a deadly confrontation with police after they escaped on foot, moments after abandoning the car.
