Eleven police officers escaped death Friday evening after their boat capsized at Bori area near Faza Island, Lamu County. Nine officers escaped unhurt but two others were injured in the 7.20pm incident and were airlifted to Mombasa for treatment.
Sources said three AK-47 rifles and a pistol were lost during the incident. “The firearms fell into the ocean when the boat capsized”, said the source.
Lamu County Commandant Ephantus Kiura however denied that the firearms disappeared.
The police said a team of eight officers attached to the Lamu Criminal Investigation Department and two marine police officers were heading to Lamu after attending Faza mobile court sitting.
Mr Kiura said the boat capsized due to strong currents and judiciary staff, who were on another boat, alerted Magogoni Naval Base.
Officers from the naval base rushed to the scene and managed to rescue the officers from drowning.
