Women who have husbands convicted for having committed genocide force their children to interrupt studies telling them that education for them is useless. They prefer to send them in mining sites to dig.
Statistics show that in Nyarusange,Muhanga District, school attendance in both Primary and Secondary schools has reduced to 3, 7% last year.
Aimable Ndayisaba, the Executive Secretary of Nyarusange Sector told Umuseke.rw that different factors explain this but the most important one is the influence mothers have on their children telling them that as their fathers are in jail, studying is a waste of time.
Mr Ndayisaba told Umuseke, rw that local administration provides material assistance to highly needy families so to help them solve at least material-related hindrances.
These supports combined with sensitization on the importance of schooling for the child are yielding positive outcomes.
Ndayisaba reveals to Umuseke.rw that if Ubudehe is not readjusted in its ways of selecting needy students to sponsor, around 72% of University students will drop out.
For him, indicators of who is poor enough to support are not fully insightful.
Different High Officials including H,E Paul Kagame have advocated for the Ubudehe to be readjusted to avoid injustices from being done unwillingly.
