In 1994-1995 the statistics show that 3 261 were recorded. In 2013-2014, this number has reached 87 013, meaning 26.6 times of increase.

Before and after the 1994, there was one single university called Université du Rwanda located in the former Butare Prefecture, the current South Province.

This university currently embodies different colleges to serve different intellectual purposes.
While different people thought that the Université du Rwanda was the only one operating in Rwanda at that time, the HEC investigated not less than seven universities in the country.

The post genocide period was hard for the recovery of the nation in different angles, including education sector.

Learners, teachers, learning and teaching facilities such as classes … were spoiled.
In 1996-1997, different universities came into existence from the single one that existed since 1994.

Today, there are not less than 45 universities in Rwanda and some of the observers indicated that this might have resulted into a poor quality of education in Rwanda.

Statistics show that in 2013-2014 there were 87 013 graduates among whom 47 867were boys and 39 146 girls.

The numbers pinpoint that in Rwanda, there are 4,038 lecturers among 2 116 are Masters’ Degree holders while 683 are PhD owners.

However big these number might look like, experts from the HEC affirm that there is a huge need for more graduates for the strength of national education progress.
