The newly elected mayor of Karongi district Ndayisaba Francois told media that he intends at reforming agriculture in his district as to make it more productive and therefore reduce the rate of poverty in his district at the level of 70 000.
Mayor Ndayisaba vowed to take and implement all necessary policies aimed at modernizing poverty and reduce the rate of poverty at 21,3% in his district.
Karongi district is inhabited by 331, 000 people whose main economic activities consist of agriculture tourism, industry, etc.
It is, however, ranked among the poorer districts in the country as 21,3% of the whole population of Karongi are categorized among poor people.
Modernized agriculture will provide locals with jobs that the big majority of the youth is aspiring to.
Mayor Ndayisaba affirmed that close partnership with residents will help in translating policies into actions.
His hope lies on the fact that different tea factories are completed in different sectors including Gisovu, Rugabano and Gasenyi will help farmers earn more money and change their lives.
This life-changing revolution will result from both job creation and from selling tea leaves to purchasing factories and therefore gain money.
Even though these initiatives are likely to significantly reduce poverty among Karongi residents, the work ahead is still huge.
As a relatively wide part of the soil is unfertile, the district officials plan to provide farmers with fertilizers to enrich the soil. This initiative will help in increasing production.
The district management aims at working closely with the Rwanda Agriculture Body so that it may provide farmers with selected seeds that are more productive and benefiting to farmers.
Complementing the already started projects, Mayor Ndayisaba will be innovating inter regional roads through putting in place the feeder roads as to boost circulation of men and goods.
Aquaculture sector will also be strengthened.
Mayor Ndayisaba said that the economic policies will involve the attraction of more investors in diverse sectors.
According to him, all the above mentioned activities will significantly reduce the rate of poverty that is currently endangering Karongi residents.
Additionally to this, he called upon Karongi residents to be open-minded and strive to overcome the poverty.
