Saturday, August 30, 2014. Airtel Rwanda staff today joined residents of Remera Sector, Nyabisindu cell, Kagara Village in the monthly Umuganda. The airtel team alongside Kagara residents cleaned and cleared the drainage and garbage points in the area. Airtel Rwanda also donated cleaning tools including hoes, shovels, slashes, rakes among others to the local community to be used in future Umuganda projects.
Speaking after Umuganda, Airtel Rwanda Managing Director, Mr. Teddy Bhullar pledged to continue the practice to not only contribute to an environmentally clean country but to also strengthen community engagement as well as support the country’s development programs of which Umuganda is among.
In his remarks, he said, “The airtel family is more than grateful to participate in Umuganda with the residents of Kagara Village. We shall continue this practice not only in Kigali City but the entire country as well.”
Florence Ntakontagize, the Nyabisindu Cell leader who spoke on behalf of Kagara residents thanked airtel for the gesture and donation to the community.
She said, “We thank Airtel for the heartfelt contribution to Kagara Village and for joining hands with us in this month’s Umuganda. Our drainage systems are now unclogged and our residents will enjoy living in a cleaner village. We hope that this practice will continue from month to month.”
Among other items pledged by Airtel to Nyabisindu Cell were 200 chairs and a public address system to facilitate future community meetings and events. Airtel brand ambassadors, Amagi The Black, Senderi International Hit and King James also took part in the Umuganda,.
Umuganda is a mandatory community service carried out in Rwanda every last Saturday of the month from 0800 hs to 1100hrs intended to build community involvement and strengthen national development programs.
