Rwanda’s Ambassador in the Netherlands, His Excellency Jean Pierre Karabaranga has called for stronger efforts to fight Genocide denial mainly in the Diaspora that has been around for over 21 years.
The Ambassador whose call also comes at the time the country is commemorating for the 22nd time the 1994 Genocide against Tutsis noted that Genocide remains common knowledge that it was committed in Rwanda and claiming over 1 million Tutsis.
“The fact is that the ICTR Trial Chamber concluded, on 2 September 1998, that “genocide was, indeed, committed in Rwanda against the Tutsi as a group” and that the Appeals Chamber confirmed, on 16 June 2006,” he said
The Ambassador who hosted the commemoration event for the Netherlands in the Hague such facts about genocide should serve as “a basis for all of us to desist any attempt to deny or trivialize facts of genocide.”
The event that kicked off the commemoration week (Kwibuka22 week) for Rwandans and friends of Rwanda in the Netherlands on Friday was attended by more than 250 guests was marked by testimonies of survivors as well as a walk to remember.
“Today as we remember, we invite Rwandans and the international community to take concrete measures to fight the genocide ideology,” the Ambassador noted.
Rwandans across the World joined their fellow Rwandans in the country to commemorate for the 22nd time the 1994 genocide against the Tutsis in a week that started on 7th April under the theme; Kwibuka22: Fighting Genocide Ideology.
