Rwanda’s envoy to the People’s Republic of China on Tuesday presented his credentials to President Xi Jinping at a ceremony in the capital, Beijing.
In an interview after the function, Amb. Charles Kayonga said President Jinping commended Rwanda’s recovery efforts after the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi and the country’s role in fostering peace in the region and beyond.
“He lauded the leadership of President Paul Kagame and the good bilateral relations that exist between the two countries,” Amb. Kayonga said.
Sino-Rwanda bilateral relations span over 50 years. Since the 1980s China has granted Rwanda over 30 turn-key projects in the areas of health, agriculture, education and infrastructure.
Trade volume between the two countries reached $240 million in 2013, growing at 50 per cent annually. Such is the mutual relationship that Amb Kayonga seeks to consolidate.
“We will continue to identify potential Chinese investors and entrepreneurs to invest in manufacturing, processing and real estate among others,” Kayonga noted.
“We will market Rwanda and East Africa as a top destination for Chinese tourists.”
