At least 10 people were killed in a terrorist attack in Northern Cameroon late Wednesday. A suicide bomber belonging to the jihadist group Boko Haram detonated his vest outside a mosque near the West African country’s border with Nigeria.
The attack occurred just after locals were breaking their fast during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
Most of the victims were members of a local group tasked with fighting Boko Haram militants. The attacker was a young boy, according to local police officials.
Boko Haram has targeted civilians in their guerrilla-style campaign in Cameroon, where they’ve also used teenage girls as suicide bombers to kill dozens.
The group, based in Nigeria, has carried out attacks in Nigeria and neighboring Chad, Niger, and Cameroon for the past seven years in its mission to create an Islamic caliphate. More than 15,000 people have been killed and 2 million displaced in the four countries.
Boko Haram pledged its allegiance to Islamic State last year, though the extent of its ties to the militants in Iraq and Syria are not known.
