Burera District: Laptop based teaching and learning improves education quality

Six years passed on as students in Kirambo sector in Burera district have been given laptops to use in learning. This improved the education quality according to education officials who laud the use of laptops in teaching-learning process in a classroom setting.

Each child holds a laptop that features his/her name

The One Laptop per child initiative is said to have improved learning among children who study in rural areas.

Children fro these areas are said to have almost similar understanding of school subjects at the same level as urban areas based students do.

Umulisa Claudine who is one the teachers in Kirambo sector said that the availability and use of such laptops improved students’ understanding of various issues that require learning and helped them to be open minded.

Each child has a laptop that he/she uses from Primary One until Primary Six. At that stage, the student is required to leave the machine at school and let others benefit from it.

For internet use, students and teaching staff use modems in their disposal. The internet accessibility allows them to explore more scientific issues such as Maths, Physics,Chemistry, …with an audio and video back ups to boost their understanding.

Students of Primary One until Three mostly use the laptops to play healthy and mind-opening computer games while the older ones use it for more complex issues.

The School director Alphonsine Mukarutwaza revealed that computer based learning played a role in helping students solve more complex mathematical puzzles.

One Laptop per child initiative is a Rwandan government backed project that aims at helping its children acquire educational package easily and embark in the ICT revolution that the world is engaged in.
