His critics said that his re-election was unconstitutional as the constitution defines that his rule expired with the lastly ended term, they claim.

However, the former rebel chief has won this term and this brought many citizens to street to manifest their anger and discomfort about his candidacy and re-election.

Pierre Nkurunziza was elected with 69%, being followed by his colleague Agathon Rwasa who, afterwards, became the deputy speaker of the Burundian Parliament.

His re-election created an international protest against it and important donors, including USA, Belgium and Germany, threatened Burundian government with possible sanctions.

The above donors qualified his re-election as unfair and unconstitutional.

Furthermore, many people died as result of this turmoil, the most important ones being the former chief intelligence Gen Adolphe Nshimirimana, former chief of staff Col Jean Bikomagu and human rights’ activist Pierre Claver Mbonimpa to whom the attempted murder failed but seriously injured him.

Information from Bujumbura stipulates that arms have fallen amid people’s hands and this endangers the lives of targeted individuals.
