“CAVM-Busogo ” wins over the “UPU” mu during a RGB’s public speaking competition

Students from the College of Agriculture, Animal Sciences & Veterinary Medicine (CAVM-Busogo) won a public speaking competition organized by the Rwanda Governance Board  and was rewarded with a Million Rwf.

The competition aimed at  increasing the awareness of the democratic governance among the educated youth who will  be leading the nation in the near future.

CAVM-Busogo  won over the  Umutara Polytechnique Univerity (UPU) with 227/300 while the UPU had 201/300.

The core questions for the debate were: Does bad governance impact on the national economic development?” and “Corruption is the deep root of bag governance”.

Umutara Polytechnique University students were to proposers’ side while the CAVM –Busogo was opposing the motion.

UPU affirmed that the good governance is the key to development highlighting the example of Rwanda which is remarkably developed since 1994 due to good governance.

For the CAVM-Busogo side, bad governance  is not the cause of less development rather, corruption, mismanagement of the public assets …are the root causes of less development.

Aftet the time reserved for the debate was over the Committee of judges selected the CAVM-Busogo are the best performers  during the debate and provided them with a check of  1 million Rwf .

The COE of RGB, Prof Shyaka Anastase who was the guest of Honor said that these kinds of debates steer the self confidence among the students especially those ones at university level. Debates are effective intellectual tools that enable students to express their ideas and convictions vehemently, Prof Shyaka said.

According to the English Lecturer Batamuriza,students still need to develop more English speaking skills and confedence as to well express themselves.

For her for this to happen, public speaking skills courses should taught to students from the primary education up to university level.

Lys Brenda Umulisa, from the winning University revealed to UM– USEKE that such competitions have equipped her with adequate skills that will help her to effectively undergo the university learning challenges as a Level One student.
