As DR Congo troops on Wednesday affirmed that they have captured the last stronghold of M23, Bunagana residents affirm that they have heard heavy gunfire between M23 rebels and FARDC army yesterday, affirming that the M23 rebels are still active.
Bunagana, the rebels’ main base located in the lush green hills near the border with Uganda, “is completely under our control”, government spokesman Lambert Mende told AFP, adding that the final battle for the town had begun early in the morning.
An official of the UN mission in the country also confirmed that troops had taken control of the town some 80 kilometres north of Goma, a major mining hub and the capital of North Kivu province.
The Chimpreports reported the FARDC airstrikes have yesterday injuring more than 20 people in the Bunagana hills during its bombings against the surviving rebels.
Reports highlight that the majority of the injured are children and women who lost their legs and arms.
Radio Okapi affirm that the FARDC hunted down M23 rebels in different hills of Mbuzi, Chanzu, Runyonyi.
