The Rwanda National Police has yet again issued fresh caution to people against bush burning which leads to wildfire and destruction of public infrastructure and natural resources in particular.

The warning follows the Friday evening wildfire which broke out in Nyungwe forest.

The fire broke out inside the forest about two hours walk from the nearest Gatare trading centre where game rangers reside, Police Spokesperson ACP Damas Gatare, said.

“The wildfire started at about 7:00pm approximately 25 kilometres from Gatare centre and Police, army and game rangers with the reinforcement of area residents joined forces and contained it, but it had already destroyed about one hectare of the forest,” ACP Gatare said.

The fire is said to have resulted from an illegal bee harvesting by the yet to be identified individuals, ACP Gatare added.

“Investigations are still ongoing to identify and arrest all those responsible for this fire incident,” he added.

He also cautioned people who burn grass in gardens and those who throw lit cigarettes, which are other things said to be causing wildfire.
