Hon Bamporiki urges for further research in drug abuse in order to find lasting solutions

He said that as he was reacting to the explanations provided by the Minister of internal security Mussa Fazil to the MPs’ commission in charge of human rights. These explanations focused on the reasons more young people keep involving themselves in drug abuse.

Hon Bamporiki

The today’s session aimed at asking the minister about the problems highlighted in the annual report 2015 in which drug abuse keeps increasing.

Another issue highlighted includes the fact that the Police delays to intervene where ‘some’ crimes have happened and this makes the investigations more vulnerable to be fully accurate.

MPs displayed their discomfort with the fact that street children who become arrested and wait for relatively long before being transferred to the transit centers once arrived there, they live with other people older than them.

Regarding the fact that more children are found in the street in these days, Min Fazil said that one of the most revealing causes of the situation is that parents are getting less engaged in the parenting responsibilities.

Min Harerimana told MPs that if children are arrested for the re-education process, organs in charge do select the ones who have vocational skills from the ones who don’t and the later ones are taken to rehabilitation centers where they also learn vocations for their future.

He said that 18 centers have been set up in 18 districts to rehabilitate the youth whose education underwent complications.

Regarding the qualification of one substance as a drug, Minister Harerimana said that one should first consult whether the etiquette upon it clearly indicate its toxicity and/or acidity rates.

According to Hon Member of parliament Bamporiki Edouard said that drug abuse among the youth is a serious threat to national interest as it affects the manpower of the future Rwanda.

He therefore advocates for further research on the real causes of it. For him, 80% of the adducted ones are at the most alarming stage at an extent that their brains have been seriously damaged.

The MPs urged the Minister Harerimana to take this issue more seriously as it affects Rwandan youth.
