Elderly 614 women from the South Province have learnt writing, reading and calculating skills so to equip them with useful intellectual tools towards social and economic self reliance.
The graduation was attended by the USA Ambassador in Rwanda Erica Barks-Ruggles alongside the South Province governor.
Governor Munyantwari thanked the Ambassador Erica for having participated into the ceremony, adding that this shows off good bilateral relations between Rwanda and the USA.
The alphabetization of those women is an initiative of Rwandan government but sponsored by the USAID.
The initiative is called Ejo Heza and the Global communities. Within six past years, 38 000 women from across Rwanda underwent such training and have graduated.
At the yesterday’s occasion, 614 ones were graduated and expressed their gratitude towards the ones who provided them with the needed skills for their good.
One of the formerly graduated ones called Mukiza Valens said the skills he acquired helped him to learn traffic rules and is not an experienced car driver.
John Ames, who heads the USAID’s Ejo Heza program in Rwanda commended the partnership nurtured with the religious church called ADEPR and this has been a good channel towards the success of the program, he said.
USA Ambassador Erica J. Barks-Ruggles at her side said that Rwanda achieves remarkable progress the inclusion education, an education policy that allows every one, every category to fetch knowledge.
For her, this is a milestone upon which sustainable development can be built and last.
The eldest graduate is 69 years old. According to schedule, the ‘USAID’s Ejo Heza program will close its activities at the end of this year.
It is currently operating in 105 sectors in different sectors across the country.
