May,22, 2014, the HVP Gatagara, a center for the education of the people with disabilities has inaugurated a site where a school for mentally retarded students will be built in five months ahead in the Gikondo Sector, in Kicukiro, Kigali city.
The construction work will start in the coming weeks and it will last for five months ahead. Manager of the HVP Gatagara in Gikondo, Nteziryayo Jean Pierre said the whole construction is worthy 160,000 Euros and package has been provide by the Belgium government. According to the calendar, the school activities will start in the next academic year.
Nteziryayo said the main objective of the school is to help mentally retarded people receive an education package they deserve as any Rwandan children.
He said that the construction of the school will be followed by training the teaching staff about the needs of the mentally retarded people in general.
The concerned entities will sensitize the parents to bring their offspring to the center to study through the media among other instruments.
The school will be equipped with special teaching and learning tools and special teachers.
At the beginning the school will host 80 children with 8 teachers. The only serious challenge that school will face is a significant lack of qualified teachers for the education of mentally retarded students.
Another significant issue the school will handle relates to the setting of a curriculum that befits the intellectual needs of the mentally retarded students.
In 1962 , the Belgian Catholic Father Ndagijimana launched a centre aiming at helping Rwandan with disabilities to receive medical treatment.
