District youth leaders from central Uganda have collected signatures, demanding a meeting with President Yoweri Museveni.

The development was after the youth leaders unanimously agreed to a motion urging the President to follow suit of the NRM manifesto and empower the district youth councils so they can ably execute development programmes in their respective districts.

In a Wednesday  meeting which took place at Hotel International Muyenga in Kampala, youth leaders expressed their dissatisfaction at what they called “the lack of empowerment to mobilize all youth government programmes.”

They argued that while President Yoweri Museveni constituted the district youth councils, in line with the NRM manifesto, he did not equip them with enough tools to counter their daunting tasks.

Ronnie Rwigyema, the Buganda youth forum chairperson, who moved the motion, intimated that currently youth councils were only in name with little or no authority.

“We, as the youth are never recognized in any form,” said Rwigyema. “Even at district level, meetings are held but with no  form of recognition accorded to the youth leaders in the area.”

He said there should mobilization of resources especially for youth councils and sensitization of all organs at the local governments on the work of youth councils.

“And President Museveni can help to motivate and empower the councils,” he said.
