Karenge sector is located in Rwamagana district, Eastern province. Its residents are worried about the current dry season that will be hotter in the coming months. They claim that the harvest will be severely affected. Around 99% of its inhabitants practice the subsistence agriculture which becomes weak when the weather goes the other way around.
Karenge dwellers cultivate diverse crops such as coffees, banana plantations, greens and fruits alongside animal breeding activities.
They practice apiculture as well.
The executive secretary of the Karenge named Emmanuel Havugimana affirms that the 99% of the locals that practice agriculture is threatened to lose its season harvest due to the early and intense dry season.
He said that the worries of the population are logical.
The most affected ones are those ones who cultivate the soil remote from the swamps as the ones cultivate in the swamps benefit from the wet and fertile soil.
Another issue that makes local people feel unsecured economically is the fact the road that usually connects them with surrounding sectors has been broken.
The road is used to carry goods from Karenge to Kigali but is currently impracticable.
This complicates the livelihoods of Karenge dwellers who normally gained money from the transactions with Kigali residents.
However, one of the local leaders promises that the road will be innovated and locals will resume their normal transactions.
