The farmers from Karongi district who participated in the agree-business exhibition event that took place yesterday told Umuseke that the planting new species of banana increases the harvest, thus reducing poverty and hindering malnutrition from being endemic.
They told Umuseke that the use of natural fertilizers played a significant role in increasing the banana fruits production especially the species called Fiya and the one called Kayinja.
Exhibitors are showing their productions in the Mutuntu sector in Karongi and came from different sectors of the district.
Most of them said that the use of the fertilizers has shown its importance in making the harvest more abundant and this played a role in reducing poor nutrition intakes.
One of them called Sembagara claver affirms that early he didn’t produce significantly but, h e adds, after the introduction of the fertilizers the production improved.
Before he said that he produced not more than 50 Kg, revealing that his current production equals to 300 Kg.
He thereafter added that he is domesticating goats and sheep to get more natural fertilizers from his herds.B
Banana farmers are rival concerning the planting of either the Fiya banana plantations (the newly introduced ones or Kayinja( traditional ones).
Some are said that planting the traditional ones will help in increasing selling of juices and banana beers while the ones keen to cultivate the Fiya ones target the production and commercialization of the banana fruits for cuisine.
