Karongi: School children spent two years studying in local church

Among 577 children who study in some of the local schools, 116 attend their studies in a EPR Church while other 74 follow their studies in a cell’s office. This situation was caused by the fact that their former schools were destroyed by heavy winds two years ago.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

During the same sad event, the thunder has struck 40 children and five of them dead. The school had seven rooms constructed in 1970 and after the calamity only three rooms remained functional.

Umuseke .rw visited the school and found that the destroyed rooms are not yet rehabilitated and, most importantly, there aren’t facilities to avoid the thunder from harming the remaining buildings.

One of the parents whose children study in the above mentioned church and cell office Sofonie Siborurema expressed her concerns about the physical situation of the schools where children attend lessons.

For her, local authorities should have built the schools as promised.

He said that locals have contributed to the preliminaries of the construction and this should have been a milestone for the authorities to finalize their promise through constructing the complex as promised.
Samuel Nteziryimana who leads the school told Umuseke that the decision to relocated children to the church and the cell office was taken as a final means of resolving the issue.

He however, adds that this poor learning environment has a negative impact on children’s attention and memorization.

This obviously impacts on their learning outcome, he added.

The Vice Mayor of Karongi district in charge of social affairs Drocella Mukashema informed that this issue is at the agenda and different bodies are pertaining to handle it in  the near future.
