This power plant located in Kibangu Sector in Muhanga district was destroyed by heavy rains that befell in that region last week. Locals told Umuseke that their belongings, such as plantations, were damaged and call for help as they face related consequences.
The plant was built by water sanitation managers commonly known as Kanyamigezi in 1987, but was under the supervision of locals.
Locals call for help as to rehabilitate the damaged plant as they’re unable to rebuild it due to the lack of both technical skills and financial abilities.
For them, authorities from both Muhanga district and the Rwanda Energy Group (REG) are the ones to provide the needed support to rehabilitate the plant.
The destruction of the electric power facility has put local users in a full lack of electricity that usually helps in different activities requiring energy.
Locals decry the fact that robbers are benefiting from this dark situation and attack people’s properties.
The Mayor of Muhanga Yvonne Mutakwasuku informed that the destruction of the facility was due to the fact that erosion is not as managed as it should.
Therefore waterfalls from the highly inclined mountains damage the surrounding infrastructures, she added.
Deforestation is another fact that facilitates the rain to be more damaging. Mayor Mutakwasuku promises that the infrastructure will be rehabilitated in the near future so to help locals re-start the normal life.
