Ministry of trade and industry in collaboration whit the Ministry of agriculture inaugurated a trading center at Giti Cy’Inyoni, Kigali City, aimed at helping farmers and traders of potatoes to sell their production harmoniously and in a coordinated way.
However, some farmers decry this initiative saying that it intends at creating a market monopoly system.
According to the officials, all farmers in their respective cells will be bringing the harvest to the nearby potatoes collecting centers (currently there are 140 centers nationwide) where there will be collected and brought to Giti cy’Inyoni Potatoes Trading center.
From there, traders from different provincial markets will come and purchase them before disseminating the package to their respective markets.
This new initiative will also help farmers to sell the production to a reasonable price depending on the one set at national level.
Minister of trade and industry Francis Kanimba said that the new system will benefit to both farmers and traders due to its coordination.
He expressed his confidence on its success as both ministries have carefully assessed it before its implementation.
The Potatoes trading center is currently under the management of a company called ‘Regional Potatoes Trading Ltd’ that collaborates with other potential potatoes farmers and traders.
Officials promised that there’s a plan to build a modern building designed to safely store potatoes in waiting.
The building will be worthy 6.3 billion Rwf.
