Kirehe: Teachers to undergo English enhancement program

Education authorities in Kirehe district, Eastern Province, undertook a English enhancement skills program among local teachers as to help them sharpen their writing and speaking skills in that language.

The program is intended to help those whose English skills are weak to enhance them and be effective teachers.

The program labelled ‘Education Quality Enhancement Awareness Campaign’ concerns at least 200 local teachers.

The Campaign is a nationwide program intended to equip education officers to boost the education quality through different channels.

In Kirehe district, authorities from the Ministry of education visited two schools namely the Groupe Scolaire Rugarama II(which hosts 391 students) and the Ecole Secondaire Rusumo with not less than 20 24( from both Primary and secondary schools).

One of the remarkable challenges found relates to the students’ weak English speaking skills that result from their teachers’ inability to effectively teach English.

The officer in Kirehe district in charge of education monitoring Theophile Mwanangu told Umuseke that weak English skills is a common struggle in the district

He said that it affects the quality of education in general.

However, he added that there is a remarkable progress amongst teachers’ in as far as English skills attainment is concerned.

Formerly some teachers were fully enable to express themselves in English, but currently the trend has changed even though more remains to be done, Mwananga said.

Mwanangu, however, revealed that the Ministry of education launched a program labelled Continous Professional Training (CPT) which aims at continuously enhance teachers English speaking skills.

To find out those teachers in an urgent need for English skills enhancement, Mwanangu said that there is an exam reserved for 200 local teachers from 64 schools.
