Ugandan rally ace Jas Mangat dominated the twice run 4.6km Super Special Stage at the Gahanga Quarry on the opening day of the Mt. Gorilla Rally on Friday to take a seven-seconds overnight lead the
Mangat, who leads the Africa Rally Championship (ARC) in a Mistubishi Evo 10, beat his rivals after finishing the two runs in two minutes and 45 seconds.
His closest rival, Jassy Singh from Zambia, in a Subaru Impreza, came finished in two minutes and 52 seconds, while Rwanda’s national champion Giancarlo Davite came third after completing the two runs in three minutes and one second.
The 2012 Mt. Gorilla Rally champion, Elefter Mitraros, came fourth after completing the two runs in three minutes and two seconds.
Christakis Fitidis (3.05), Claude Kwizera (3.08), Uganda’s Fred Wapamba (3.12) complete the top seven after day one.
Burundian Mohamed Roshanali was among the top ten drivers after completing the two runs in three minutes and 19 seconds.
Ugandan pair of Abdu Sempebwa finished ninth while Ismail Otega clinched tenth position in 3.28 and 3.39, respectively.
The real battle is expected on Saturday when drivers compete in six competitive sections totaling 174.6 kilometers with 171.9 kilometres of road sections in Mukoto.
Davite (Subaru Impreza N10) will be flagged off first, followed by Mangat (Mistubishi Evo 20), Jassy Singh (Zambia, Subaru N10), Fitidis (Subaru Impreza N12), Claude Kwizera (Subaru Impreza N10), Elefter Mitraros (Subaru Impreza N12), Abdu Sempebwa (Subaru N12) and Fred Wapamba (Subaru Impreza N12) in that particular order.
