The Rwandan Minister in charge of disaster management Jeanne D’Arc de Bonheur told reporters that since the starting of this year, rain related disasters killed over 50 people in different districts of Rwanda.

The MIDIMAR (Ministry of Disaster Management and Refugee Affairs) revealed that the deadliest rain related disaster befell Rwandans in the night of 23 where it killed at least 19 in three districts across Rwanda.

Landslides was the main disaster that killed many people on that night, one of them being a Burundian.

In Rulindo district seven people died with two more were left seriously injured.

Three people from Gatsibo were killed by that heavy rain, which also damaged 45 hectares of growing crops in that area.

48 houses in Rwamagana district were seriously damaged and eleven hectors of land were also spoiled in Nyabihu district.

Disasters that killed people in these past few months include thunders (which killed 31), landslides (which killed five people), floods that killed four people and heavy and deadly winds that killed not less than eleven people.

Gasabo districts officials and the ones from MIDMAR urged people living in different high risk zones to evacuate as to avoid more deaths in the coming days.
