During the today’s court hearing, the genocide suspect called Bernard Munyagishari said that he is not a Rwandan as read int the court statement but rather a DRC native.
Munyagishari is accused of having formed a militia branch in his neighborhood, the name of the group was called Intarumikwa.
This militia is said to have conducted, under the obligation of Munyagishari, several killings that took lives of Tutsis in the former Nyundo area, Gisenyi.
He was arrested in 2011. As the court hearing started, he informed the court that he is a DRC native and that what he is being accused of shouldn’t be taken seriously.
At this, the prosecution retaliated that the allegations he is being accused of are universal and therefore that he should be convicted accordingly if found guilty.
One of the key issues that characterized the Munyagishari’s case is that his lawyers namely Niyibizi Jean Baptiste and Hakizimana John abandoned the case and the court chose others for him but he denounced them, adding that he is the only one to choose them.
The accused, who normally, uses French as a language of communication in the court said that using French in his defense while the court and the prosecution do use Kinyarwanda in his trial make the whole process ineffective.
He urged that the whole judgement procedure should be suspended before as the lawyers he needs are not yet chosen.
The prosecution said that the defense of Munyagishari is baseless as he, seemingly, understands Kinyarwanda depending on how he defends himself using that language.
