The Rwanda Correctional Services authorities told Umuseke that one of the Musanze prison tried to escape and prison guard short him dead. The incident happened early this morning, sources report.
The Manager of the Musanze prison SSpt John Murara told Umuseke that the shot prisoner has been hiding in one of the places of the prison and guards searched him but in vain.
In the dawn this Friday, the prison used a cord to get out of the prison but one of the prison guards tried to arrest him but he denied to hand him over and was shot as he tried to run away.
SSpt Murara affirms that the prison guards shot in the air to warn him and persuade him to stop running but he refused.
This pushed the guards to shoot him and he succumbed to death.
As the news that the prisoner was missing, the prison management held a joint meeting with all the prisoners.
During the meeting, prisoners were urged to advise the dead one to hand himself over to the authorities but he was nowhere to be seen.
The dead one was named Frank Muhumuza and his identification papers show that he is a Ugandan citizen from Namasura, Kampala.
SSpt John Murara said that the dead had a double nationality as a Rwandan and a Ugandan.
The Spokesperson of the Rwanda Correctional Services, CIP Hilary Sengabo confirmed the death of the prisoner, adding that he was a Rwandan whose family members live in Bugesera district, East Province.
According to the news from the RCS, the dead one was sentenced to three years in jail due to his robbery involvement.
