Mutuntu: The only sector of Karongi district that lacks electric installations

This remote sector of Karongi district is the only one to be equipped with  electric installations to boost economic growth of the sector and the district as whole.

Arriving in the sector requires one to travel miles using a dusty roads either with cars, bikes or on foot.

The history of electicity in their neighobrghood started with the small power plant set up with ecclesiastics who established it upon the Mbirurume river.

The electric production was used to supply the Mukungu health center but its functions didn’t last longer as the initiators left the place but the officials in place did not rehabilitate the power plant to make more productive and lasting.

However the inhabitants managed to establish some of the infrastructures to ease the canalization of the electric power once made available.

Apart from the pillars and cables, Mutuntu dwellers purchases computers and other electric stuffs to use in case the long waited electricity will be canalized.

Dwellers claim that it is hard for them to get hold on some official papers that require electricity to be made available.

To acquire them they have to travel to Twumba sector where electricity is operational.

The journey towards Twumba costs 5000 Rwf francs per person, meaning that the paper that is worthy five hundred Rwandan francs requires a ticket of five thousand Rwf.

There is not bank not SACCO( a saving cooperative entity), that means that the employers operating in the area pay salaries to employees a bit late as the payment requires electricity to process the operations.

In Mutuntu, there is no barber shops that use modern tools, no modern metal working, no significant modern handcraft activities, all related professions are carried out with traditional means and techniques.

Mobile phone owners make a queue to the only available battery charging facility (a generator) where they pay accordingly.

A hostel room in the area is worthy 2 000 Rwf per night and our reporter in the area a candle to enlighten the room.
