Ndera: The 359 newly excavated bodies of the 1994 genocide victims decently buried

These bodies of the Tutsis killed in the 1994 genocide were found in four mass graves in psycho-therapeutic center of Ndera Sector, Gasabo district. Numerous 1994 genocide survivors from Ndera and neighboring areas came to decently bury their beloved ones.

These four mass graves were kept secrets by some of the genocide convicts or other locals who knew these whereabouts.

One of the genocide survivors who participated into the search for these mass graves to unearth the bodies called Antoine Ruvebana told Umuseke that the searching team was about to withdraw from searching as their efforts were seemingly futile.

He added that at a certain moment they came closer to some items that belonged to the Tutsis killed and thrown in those graves.

That motivated them to keep searching and found the bodies they have been searching for more than two weeks. The Gasabo district administration provided them with caterpillars to quickly carry out their activities and were able to find bodies some weeks later.

The Mayor of district of Gasabo Stephen Rwamurangwa called locals who remain silent on where the bodies of the Tutsis have been thrown during the 1994 genocide to overcome their fears and indicate the mass graves as to help survivors burry they beloved ones.

Revealing where the mass graves are located will promote the unity and reconciliation among Rwandans, Rwamurangwa said.

The President of the IBUKA( Umbrella of the 1994 genocide survivors organizations), Prof Jean Pierre Dusingizemungu called upon Rwandans to be more open and inform survivors on the whereabouts of the graves where bodies of the 1994 genocide victims were thrown.

The bodies were decently buried in the 1994 genocide memorial site located in the CARAES-Ndera center, a memorial site where over 21 thousand bodies are buried.
