As the 2014 year comes to its end, the UM– USEKE has collected the news headlines that mostly marked this ending year.
HEADLINES:
– As we embarked into 2014, the most event was the death of Col Karegeya Patrick murdered in Johannesburg South Africa. Early, he has been the chief intelligence in Rwanda defense forces army.
– Rwanda National Police has arrested the singer Kizito Mihigo with other co-accused. The court will be pronouncing its verdict on February, 27, 2015.
-The 20 Genocide commemoration event was held in a special way to honor the Tutsis and Hutu moderates killed during the 1994 genocide against the Tutsis. The French authorities did not attend the event.
– Rwanda has sent its troops in the CAR for peacekeeping missions in this thrown nation.
-Rwanda, Kenya, Uganda, Burundi and South Sudan agreed to set up joint military operations forces to mutually help in case one of these nations is militarily attacked.
– As the year went on, Brig Gen (Rtd) Frank Rusagara, Col. Byabagamba and Kabuye David were arrested for their suspect involvement into national security disturbances.
-The former Prime Minister Pierre Damien Habumuremyi resigned and was replaced to his former duties by Murekezi Anastase who operated as the minister of labor
– In the middle of the year, the Kigali city authorities warned Kigali dwellers that heavy noise is prohibited and whoever will be caught disturbing others with noise will be prosecuted.
– This year has happened the sudden death of widely gospel journalist Patrick Kanyamibwa who passed away due to a road accident.
-The former President of the Senate, Dr Jean Damascene Ntawukuriryayo has resigned from his functions and Makuza Bernard took the lead, afterwards.
-The BBC’s controversial documentary realized by Jane Corbin was released and brought in critics for its 1994 genocide denial aspects,
– As the year approaches its end, three mayors of Gasabo, Rwamagana, and Gatsibo resigned, respectively. Comments stipulated that their resignations were due to the poor performances in fulfilling the Imihigo performances.
-Fire outbreaks blazed many commercial buildings, prisons, factories and boarding schools’ dormitories, among other important facilities.
– This ending year, raod accident took many lives of Rwanda, among which the highly deadly accident was the one that happened in the Kigali Nyagatare road killing sixteen people.
-The case of Mutabazi Joel and co-accused was pronounced and Mutabazi was sentenced to life imprisonment.
– Cases of genocide suspects were pronounced while others are still undergoing . The ones that remain involve Leon Mugesera, Agnes Ntamabyariro, Pastor Jean Uwinkindi and the one of Charles Bandora.
– Senator Nzirasanabo who was early sentenced to life imprisonment was found not guilty and released.
ECONOMY
– The World Bank reported that Rwandan national economy has increased to 7,2 per cent while the Rwandan government announced that the economy has increased at 7,8 per cent.
-In the middle of the year, the AfDB summit was held in Rwanda for the first time.
-Nyabarongo power plant construction plant was completed and started producing electric energy needed for national economy.
– Rwanda was listed number three among the most performing economies in Africa in the annual report called Global competitiveness report 2014-2015.
– This year, the Rusumo bridge that joins Rwanda to Tanzania was completed and launched
-The Rwanda Revenue Authority announced that the taxes and revenues were estimated to 769 billion Rwf.
-The Parliamentarian Accounts Committee has hold responsible different government based institutions for their alleged involvements into public accounts evasions.
SPORTS
– Valens Ndayisenga won the Tour du Rwanda and became the first Rwandan for this record since the Tour began,
-The FERWAFA backed commission has decided that 28 football players were not of Rwandan nationality. This news have caused much of controversy.
-Rwanda was suspended to attend the CAF tournaments due to the claims of DRC player Daddy Birori.
Minister Joseph Habineza was back in the Ministry of Sports and culture. He was warmly welcomed by the youth,
– APR FC won both the Amahoro Cup and the Championship Cup,
ENTERTAINMENT
-The Tanzanian singer came to Rwanda to entertain music lovers in the yearly East African Party,
-US based singer Akon came to Rwanda in his way towards DRC in a concert aimed at strengthening the culture of peace among the DRC nationals.
-The Rwandan Rapper Jay Polly was crowned the PGGSS IV winner,
-Rapper Riderman was involved into an car accident and caught by the Police,
-The billboard showing singer King James kissed by both the actual Miss Rwanda 2014 Akiwacu Colombe and last year’s Aurore Kayibanda was removed after bringing much controversy.
