At least seven soldiers in Niger have been killed in the past week following clashes with Islamist militants Boko Haram, the country’s army has said.
Nigeri soldiers, together with counterparts from Chad, attacked the militants’ bases killing 30 insurgents and arresting two, an army spokesman said.
Two attacks took place in the southern eastern region of Diffa near the border with Nigeria, the statement said.
Five soldiers were killed in an ambush on Monday morning and another two died when their patrol vehicle went over an improvised explosive device (IED), the statement says.
A seven-year insurgency by Boko Haram has left killed thousands of people mainly in Nigeria, the main base for the militants, and areas of neighbouring Niger, Chad and Cameroon.
