Ten years ago, the rate of poor from Nyaruguru was about 85% and according to the Mayor this was a result of discriminatory policies elaborated by the former governments that undermined the wellbeing of the area.

The 1994 genocide against the Tutsis came to worsen the already alarming economic situation that prevailed in Nyaruguru district.

However, Francois Habitegeko affirms that the current ruling government in general and the district management have set up relevant policies susceptible of changing the situation for good.

The 2006 national census has shown that the Nyaruguru was ranked the lastly economically fair among all the districts of Rwanda.

The other census of 2011 found that the number of the poor has declined at an extent that the percentage was about 61% while in 2014 it was counted to 47%.

Depending on the pace at which poverty is decreasing, Mayor Habitegeko told Umuseke that in 2018 the poor people in his district will be reduce and reach 30%.

According to mayor Habitego, the most important tool to overcome extreme poverty is to be committed to development policies that are shaped to accelerate economic growth.

The mind change that aims at working hard to achieve one’s economic self reliance is a useful issue that helped some of Nyaruguru dwellers overcomes extreme poverty.

According to Mayor Habitegeko, the  current electricity availability rate at the whole Nyaruguru  district is about 20% while it was about 0,8% on 2011.

At the other side, residents claim for more increase of infrastructures to boost social and economic development.

They claim that many electric installations are not spread in many corners of the district.
