News from Tanzania affirm that the Heads of States of the East Africa Community convened to meet in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania on Thursday, 08, September, 2016. This Summit will bring together all the EAC Presidents including Paul Kagame of Rwanda and Pierre Nkurunziza of Burundi that are in bad relations for one year.
Tensions between Rwanda and Burundi erupted since April 2015 after President Nkurunziza was re-elected for a third term. His government accuses Rwanda of backing armed militia that aim at invading his nation ‘from Rwanda’.
The Summit will feature other Heads of States such as Salva Kill of South Sudan, Jomo Kenyatta of Kenya, Yoweli Museveni of Uganda, and Dr Pombe Magufuli of Tanzania.
The Tanzanian Minister of foreign affairs, Dr Augustine Mahiga informed that during the Summit, Heads of States will validate the integration letter, allowing the effective entry of South Sudan in the East African Community.
Heads of States will be assessing the security issues facing the community. The Summit is meant to assess how effective relations between Rwanda and Burundi can be restored as it is likely to undermine the effective leadership of the EAC.
