The Government has warned politicians against politicizing the Kasese clashes.Internal affairs minister, Jeje Odongo, said the clashes are not political as alleged by opposition politicians.
“Do not brand the clashes as political persecution because issues of this region started way back and cannot be blamed on the NRM government,” Odongo said.
The minister attributed the clashes to purported secession to form Yiira state, land disputes, economic disparities and controversies between the Obusinga of Rwenzururu and Obudingiya of Bamba. He said the government will continue to devise means to solve the challenges.
The minister’s remarks follow Opposition leader Dr. Kiiza Besigye’s call for an independent inquiry into Kasese clashes that has claimed over 100 lives.
Addressing the press in Jinja town, Besigye condemned the manner in which the Omusinga (king) of Rwenzururu Charles Wesley Mumbere was arrested.
He said the use of force was not necessary. Over 100 people including police officers have died and 149 arrested in the clashes.
