President Kagame and his guest the Indian Vice President Hamid Ansari held talks on how bilateral cooperation can be enhanced for mutual benefit. The talks took place at the President Palace at Urugwiro.
The Indian leader is in Rwanda for a three days official visit. Before being hosted by the Head of State, Hamid Ansari visited the Kigali Memorial Site and hold talks with the President of Senate of Rwanda Bernard Makuza.
The Rwandan State Minister on the Ministry of Foreign affairs Claude Nikobisanzwe affirmed that the talks between the two leaders underpinned the bilateral cooperation between both Indian and Rwanda.
Rwanda and India established diplomatic relations since 1999 and India is represented in Rwanda by a non resident High Commissioner with residence in Kampala.
Following HE Paul Kagame’s visit in India as he attended the Gujarat in January 2017, India expressed interest in opening a mission in Kigali to further strengthen bilateral relations between both nations.
During the same summit, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the donation of US$ 2 Million worth of medecine to Rwanda , a cash grant of US$ 1 million towards the purchase of the medical equipment from India as well as a concessional line of credit to fund Huye-Kibeho Road project estimated at US$ 81 million.
On the business side, a total of 66 investment projects from India valued at $ 3317.5 million have beeb registered by RDB over the last six years(2011-2016).
Key investment include Airtel, Acacia Property Developers(Zinc Hotel) and Mahatma Gandhi University, among others.
