Police in Kirehe District on December 27 arrested two men found in possession of 45 kilograms of marijuana.
The Eastern Region Police Spokesperson Inspector of Police (IP), Emmanuel Kayigi, who confirmed the arrest, identified the suspects as Pascal Ndayisaba 20 and Damascene Vuguziga, who were arrested in Cyunuzi cell of Gatore sector at around 9 pm in the night while they tried to seek for customers.
“The two were arrested following available information that the suspects were dealing in the sale of illegal drugs in the area,” he said.
“Drug dealing is an illegal business and its consumption is very dangerous to the health of the consumer. It is also common that drug abusers end up committing crime like theft, rape, assault and even murder, so we should all stand up against this scourge.”
He lauded residents for their continuous cooperation with police and also urged them to report any illegal activity or suspects to security organs.
The two suspects are currently held at Kirehe Police Station as they wait for their court hearings.
Fighting drugs abuse is one of the Rwanda National Police priorities and a number of initiatives have been laid to combat the vice through community policing where majority dealers and users have since been arrested.
Article 594 penalizes any person who consumes, injects, inhale or makes any unlawful use of narcotic drugs with a term of imprisonment of three to five years and a fine of Rwf500, 000 to Rwf5 million.
