At least 78 police personnel have been fired from the Police Force since last July over corruption-related cases, according to the Force’s spokesperson.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, ACP Damas Gatare, the Spokesperson of Rwanda National Police, said nine of the officers are under prosecution in different courts across the country.
Some of the dismissed were paraded before the media last year.
Gatare said Rwanda National Police has taken measures to ensure zero tolerance to corruption, including strict supervision and control among the personnel.
He said as Rwanda celebrates the 20th Liberation Day and Police’s 14 years of existence, crimes were going down due to several measures like community policing, which have ensured citizens are part of the process to ensure security in their respective communities.
He outlined theft, drug and child abuse, rape among the common crimes that remain prevalent in the country.
Upon conviction corruption attracts between five and seven years or a fine between Rwf2m and Rwf10m, or both.
