Reading for Change event to bolster writing and reading culture in Rwanda

Following the last fruitful 11 editions of ‘Reading for Change’, Afflatus Africa has organized the 12th of this event of which they say it’s geared towards bolstering writing and reading culture in the Thousand Hills Country, Rwanda.

Miss Jolly Mutesi, Prof. Jolly Mazimpaka and Mr Clement Kirenga who were the panelists, pinpointed that women’s inclusion is highly needed in the development of the country

On this Saturday at Kigali Public Library, under the theme “the role of girls and women’s literacy in achieving sustainable development”, these series of storytelling and book review, as usual, brought together authors, readers, writers, librarians, publishers and so many others.

Miss Jolly Mutesi, Prof. Jolly Mazimpaka and Mr Clement Kirenga who were the panelists, pinpointed that women’s inclusion is highly needed in the development of the country and thereby motivated and inspired girls to like writing and reading as the only surefire way boom their knowledge and skills.

In the light of the theme, Miss Jolly Mutesi said “empowering girls leads to the reduction of hunger and poverty” and encouraged girls to embrace and use opportunities they get.

“Curiosity leads to knowledge. Once you learn how to read you will be forever free,” said Prof. Jolly Mazimpaka.

Apart from open discussions held, he attendees got a chance to hear from different poets including Urbain Sugira in his poem “Immortal”. This was followed by a brief book review presented by Anne Mpinganzima telling more about the book outlining strong points comprising the book.

Since last year in April 20, after the launch of ‘Reading for Change’ event, Afflatus Africa has introduced clubs in high schools that and facilitate them on weekly basis in their fields of interests like journalism, Writing and entrepreneurship.

It also subscribes for 20 high school students per year at Kigali Public Library as a way of encouraging schools and parents to subscribe their children and help them get access to books hence increase their reading capability and changing their lives.

Bertin Ganza Kanamugire is a young social entrepreneur who wishes to change people’s lives.

He believes that changing people’s lives does not necessarily require huge investment rather a full commitment, a clear vision for the future and devotion.
