Rwanda Education Board (REB) partnering with United States Agency for International Development (USAID), has revealed it will award motorcycles and tablets to the best performing teachers, during the 2018 International Teachers’ Day on this Friday, October 05, 2018.

A Professional and Competent Teacher is a Foundation to Quality Education

Today, USAID handed over 30 tablets to REB and the latter’s Director General, Dr. Irenee Ndayambaje proved the tablets will contribute to teachers’ daily research geared towards bolstering quality education.

Each best performing teacher at district level will be awarded with tablet, while motorcycles will be awarded to those at the Province and  Kigali City levels.

In addition to motorcycle, the best teach at the national level will be awarded other distinctive prizes during the day’s celebration in Rwamagana district, Eastern Province.

The Director of Education at USAID, Luann Gronhovd, says they are heartened to support REB in recognizing the best performing teachers of 2018 with these prizes.

“We know that high performing teachers are key to learning. Those teachers are incredibly hard working and deserve our utmost respect,” Luann pinpoints.

Dr. Ndayambaje wholeheartedly thanked USAID for their support and other perpetual kinds of partnership that they have had.

Through its program, “USAID Soma Umenye”, the agency has a goal of improving the reading performance of at least one million students and has provided textbooks and teacher’s guides country wide.

In the light of this program, more than 4,600 Primary One (P1) Kinyarwanda teachers were trained. Moreover, the agency conducted School Leaders’ orientation which included the District Directors of Education (DDEs), District Education Officers (DEOs), and Sector Education officers (SEOs) in all 30 districts.

“Because of this partnership, we will provide at least one book to every Rwandan student, while five children have been sharing only one book, added the Director General.

The International Teacher’s Day will be celebrated under the theme “A Professional and Competent Teacher is a Foundation to Quality Education” while the global theme is “The right to education means the right to a qualified teacher.”
