The Rwanda Development Board has announced that the Akagera National Park is now home of newly re-introduced rhinos from South Africa. Ten have landed while there are more ten others to arrived soon.
The re-introduction of these mammals was coordinated by the African Parks, Howard G. Buffett Foundation and RDB.
The 50 rhinos that lived in Akagera National Park in 1970s were extinguished from the park due to poachers.
Its extinction became complete in 2007 but since then Rwandan government tried to re-introduce them.
The manager of the African Parks called Peter Fearnhead condemned the poaching activities that threaten the lives of these rhinos that normally bland the African continent.
He lauded the efforts of Rwandan government to re-introduce these animals, adding that it will increase the welfare of biodiversity and enrich the tourist attractions.
The RDB’s Clare Akamanzi said that return of the rhinos is a step made by Rwanda in enriching the tourism.
She lauded all partners who collaborated as to make this endeavor be successful.
The USA mogul Howard G Buffet who contributed in making the return of the rhinos real congratulated all the stakeholders in making this a reality.
According to wildlife conservation companies, there are currently not more than 5000 rhinos in the world.
