The Minister of agriculture Dr Geraldine Mukeshimana told media that Rwanda is facing prolonged drought but she added that the country is not endergoing famine.
Her statement was not convincing enough to journalists who, basing their arguments on citizens’s testimonies, affirmed that some parts of the nation face real famine.
Concerning the accounts according which a certain number of Rwandans are fleeing towards Uganda, Minister Mukeshimana uttered that those people enter Uganda in search of jobs.
She, however, admitted that 47 000 people enduring severe drought that has significantly reduced the agriculture production.
In order to fight against this, the Rwandan government is providing its needy citizens with food for their survival, Minister Mukeshimana informed reporters this Monday.
The Minister of agriculture Dr Mukeshimana said that one of the lasting and effective measures to take to adequately hinder the drought is to use irrigation techniques in areas where it is practicable.
She added that the current drought resulted from the worldly climate change and each country is facing its own consequences, adding that 50 million of Africans are experiencing negative outcomes of this long lasting and devastating drought.
