This was asserted by officials from the Ministry of agriculture at the launch of the cultivation of a new crop believed to be very lucrative as it will be produce more during its seasonal harvesting period.
It is expected that its production will be worthy 200 million $ and therefore contribute significantly to national economy.
The tree is introduced by the ‘One Million project’ that aims at increasing both effective agriculture and healthy nutrition.
According to the estimations of the Ministry of agriculture, the macadamia tree starts producing after four years but its harvest becomes practicable at the fifth year.
Experts affirm that the tree’ production lasts for one hundred years long without any other cultivation.
The permanent secretary in the ministry of agriculture, Innocent Musabyimana told reporters that the ‘One Million project’ intends at planting one million macadamia trees in five Rwandan districts before spreading countrywide.
According to him, one tree produces between 25 kilos and 50 kilos during its seasonal harvest.
One of the added values of the tree is that farmers are able to take it to market at its harvest time without drying it.
The Permanent secretary Musabyimana urged farmers to start thinking about how to invest in the cultivation of this high quality tree.
