Rwandan writer urged youth to nurture writing habits

Yolande Mukagasana is elderly Rwandan writer who wrote many books in French, narrating her experience before and during the genocide against the Tutsis. Her writings go beyond that and underline the role that France played in the 1994 genocide against the Tutsis.

On Friday, 20, April, 2018 she participated into a book reading event labelled Reading For Change organized by the Afflatus Africa, where she called her audience to nurture reading and writing skills and habits as to become the future Rwandan celebrated writers.

Mukagasana said that aging takes writers’ energy to write thus calling them to get ready to them over.

The event that took place at the Kigali Public Libray, Kakiru, was attended by at least 170 people.

All discussions were emphasizing the role of reading and how it should make positive changes.

Among the best known participants included Rwanda’s known author and genocide survivor “ Yolande Mukagasana,  Hon. Antoine Mugesera, Jean-Luc Galabert, a Frenchman who owns a library, singer Viatora Weya and many more authors and booklovers.

Aline Igihozo, Annie Mpinganzima, Jackson Dushime, and Rugero Iris together made a readers panel discussion with other topics: “Make a past review to prepare many centuries ahead by reading”.

The authors’ panel discussion was made of Karen Bugingo, Patient Kwizera, and Fred Mfuranzima; with the topic “Writing African stories should be the key to leave a real and strong legacy for next generation to come”.

The audience was enthusiastic on commenting and posing relevant question as to get clear insights on the role of a positive reading.

After the panel discussion, awards were handled to best debaters namely university students.

The event was organized by Afflatus Africa.  Afflatus Africa promotes personal growth and acts as a link between the person one is and a person one aspires to be.

It aims at promoting inter-generational exchange through mentorship and career guidance
