The Rusororo cemetery is getting overused at a high speed rate

TheRusororo  cemetery is the most used cemetery in Rwanda as all Kigali city resident bury their beloved ones.  Within five past years, its half is used and there are more worries that it will be overused within less than five coming years if this pace is maintained.

Recently Rwandan officials in the Ministry of sports and culture affirmed that there are an option to re mediate to this challenge namely the dead body burning. This option, however, is challenging citizens due to its related price and the narrow land to use.

Other cemeteries in Kigali or in its outskirts are nearly overused. These include Remera, Nyamirambo, and Busanza

The Rusororo cemetery started being used in 2011 and is 12 kilometer squares. During its inaugural event, it has been said that it can contain not less than 14 000 graves and was predicted to be fully used in 2029.

Our reporter who visited the cemetery observed that it is getting overused and the situation becomes worse as more people are coming to inhabit Kigali city and, obviously, brings in an increase of people who die and get buried in that cemetery.

Locals told Umuseke that prices set up for people to bury their ones are also alarming. The smallest price is 15 000 Rwf while the highest is set for 750 000Rwf.

The middle price is 200 000 Rwf for a middle income generating person while alive.

The Rusororo cemetery is the busiest one in Rwanda even though it is the most expensive one.

Even thought this is the situation on ground, the government of Rwanda has issued an alternative to this challenge, namely the dead body burning and sand burying.

The most remaining task  is to have enough machines and skilled staff for this new policy to be implemented.

Rwandans are also urged to change their mindsets on the use and and usefulness of this new burial practices.
