Eduard Muhire and Jean Paul Mutaganzwa were arrested red-handed on January 6 in Kacyiru Sector after their superior followed them up following information provided by the would-be victim.

It is alleged that the duo connived to solicit a bribe from a woman, who  makes and sells bricks in Kacyiru.

Apparently, the two suspects currently detained at Remera Police station, told the woman that she was in the bricks business illegally and laying them from a wrong place.

Police in the District said the money was solicited from the woman under the pretense that it was a fine levied against her.

One of the suspects, Muhire confesses to the crime adding that they were supposed to  share the money with his accomplice.

Meanwhile, Fred Mufuruke, the Director General of Territorial Administration and Governance in the Ministry of Local Government commended the partnership between government institutions like Police and the public to fight corruption and other crimes in the country.

He observed that there are some individuals who try or want to use their powers to infringe on other people’s rights or harass them for their own benefit, the behaviours he said Rwandans shouldn’t tolerate.

“No one is above the law, be it a leader or any other person, they are required to do their duties professionally and in accordance with the law and going beyond that you will be charged accordingly,” he added.

Mufuruke further urged members of DASSO to be exemplary, uphold discipline and professionalism, and partner with police and other institutions and the public to fight and prevent crimes like corruption.

Superintendent Modest Mbabazi, the Police Spokesperson for the Central region called upon everyone to refrain and report anyone involved in graft related tendencies.

Article 635 of the penal code stipulates that, any person who explicitly or implicitly demands or directly or indirectly receives gifts or any other illegal benefits for him/herself or another person or accepts it as a promise in order to accomplish an illegal act or to refrain from carrying out his /or her duties, shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of more than five to seven years and a fine of two to ten times the value of the illegal benefit demanded.
